Good News for Clean Tech: China's Reign over Rare Earth Metals is Ending

Over the past few years, much has been made of China's grip on the rare earth metals market. The country produces 95 percent of the world's supply and in 2010 it began restricting exports of the metals which are used in electronics, hybrid cars, solar panels, wind turbines and more. It's been thought that clean technology development could be held back or stalled because China was seemingly trying to keep most of the rare earth metals for their own manufacturing needs while exporting the rest at a high price.

It looks like that reign is now ending. The price of rare earth metals has actually been falling since spiking in 2010. See the chart below by Reuter's Scott Barber that demonstrates how those prices have fallen while prices for gold and silver have remained the same.

? Scott Barber/Reuters

The reason for the turnaround is that when faced with this roadblock from China, other countries and technology companies quickly found solutions. Countries like the U.S., Brazil, India and South Africa all began ramping up mining of the metals from their own reserves, decreasing their dependence on Chinese exports. Then, more importantly, companies began recycling the metals from their products and finding manufacturing processes that used less of the metals in the first place.

In particular, Japan has aggressively reduced its imports from China. The Washington Post reports, "Meanwhile, Japan has rushed to reduce its dependence on rare earths over the past few years?especially since China has a habit of restricting exports every time the two nations get into a territorial spat. Panasonic has developed a technique to recycle neodymium from old electronic appliances. Honda is extracting rare earths from used car batteries. TDK Corp., which creates magnets for motors, now sprays dysprosium on its motors rather than mixing it in, in order to conserve. All told, reports the Asahi Shinbun, Japan?s demand for rare earths dropped from 31,000 tons in 2010 to 23,000 tons in 2011."

They say necessity is the father of invention and this was certainly the case here. China's restrictions on the export of these metals actually lead to more responsible actions by manufacturers like in-house recycling of their products. Not only did they find a way to work around a limited supply of rare earth metals, but they are now cutting down on e-waste too. As rare earth metal mining is actually not so great for the environment, recycling what we use so that we have to mine less is the best solution.

However, China is reacting to the fall in prices by increasing their export quota. We hope that doesn't discourage any of the progress that has been made.

Lenovo IdeaTab A2109

The Google Nexus 7 ?and the New Apple iPad ?are our two top-rated tablets, representing the best combinations of price, performance, and features in small- and large-screen sizes. The Lenovo IdeaTab A2109, with an uncommon 9-inch display but a fair $299 (16GB) list price, falls somewhere in the middle. Its solid aluminum build and capable quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor are all well and good, but a chunky form and mediocre screen hold this middle-of-the-road tablet back.

Design and Features
The IdeaTab A2109 is attractively designed, with a brushed aluminum body and distinctive concave edges. But at 9.3 by 6.5 by 0.46 inches (HWD) and 1.26 pounds, it's not exactly sleek. Along the left edge is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a tough-to-slide Orientation Lock switch, and Volume buttons. The bottom panel is bare, while the right side is home to micro USB and micro HDMI ports. Up top is a Power button, and a long plastic strip along the top of the aluminum back houses two speaker grilles and the rear-facing camera. The plastic strip is removable, revealing a microSD card slot, but the flap is very difficult to remove?so much so that it required a small flat head screwdriver to pry open. Once I accessed the slot, my 64GB SanDisk card worked fine to ratchet up the 16GB of onboard storage.?

The 9-inch size is uncommon, with most Android tablets using 7- or 10-inch displays?the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9?is one of the few tablets with a similar sized screen. With a 1,280-by-800-pixel resolution, on paper, the screen is on par with competitors using the same resolution on slightly larger displays. ?It's sharp and bright, but looks like a lower-quality display than the one found on the Asus Transformer Pad TF300, which shares the same resolution, but looks brighter with more vibrant colors.?Also, the screen has a very poor viewing angle, which makes anything off-center look washed out.

For pictures and video, you get a 3-megapixel rear-facing camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.?While the cameras will suffice for stills in a pinch,?producing poor images that suffer from considerable noise and general lack of sharpness,?video is almost unuseable.?The rear-facing camera is capable of 1080p, but the resulting video is about as bad as I've seen on a tablet. Frame rates top out at 12 fps outdoors and drop below 10 indoors, with blurry, out of focus, and choppy video.

As far as connectivity, the IdeaTab A2109 is a?Wi-Fi-only tablet that hooks into 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4GHz band. There's also Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS on board, both of which worked fine in my tests.?

Performance and Software
Powering the A2109 is Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.2GHz with 1GB RAM. This seems to be the new standard for mid- to high-end Android tablets, which is good, since the chip generally produces fast and responsive performance in all of the devices it powers. The A2109 scored on par with the Nexus 7 in every benchmark, and the tablet felt fast in actual use. Gaming is also solid, and unlike its Qualcomm-powered sibling, the IdeaTab S2110A, it has access to all the exclusive Nvidia gaming titles. It's also much smoother than the S2110A in general, with more polished animations and app transitions. ?

The tablet runs Android 4.0.4 "Ice Cream Sandwich" with the same modifications found on the S2110A. You get the somewhat-gimmicky 3D cube animations, but they're a lot smoother on the A2109. The home screen is populated by various Lenovo widgets, ranging from local weather to calendars and notepads. Preloaded apps include Norton Security, Evernote, Docs To Go, and some games like Cut the Rope HD. And there's a shortcut on the system bar that brings up five options for tweaking the tablet's settings.?

For video, the A2109 supports Xvid, DivX, MPEG4, H.264, and AVI videos at up to 1080p resolution. For audio, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA files all played fine. The speakers, while branded with an SRS WOW HD tag, sound weak and lack any substantial bass response.

In our battery rundown test, which loops a video with the screen brightness set to maximum and Wi-Fi switched on, the A2109 lasted an underwhelming 6 hours and 46 minutes. For comparison, the 7-inch Nexus 7 lasted 10 hours, 37 minutes, while the larger screen TF300 lasted 7 hours, 53 minutes on the same test.

Conclusions
The Lenovo IdeaTab A2109 doesn't do enough to stand out. Its unconventional screen size may appeal to those torn between the 7-inch and 10-inch form factors, but the low-quality screen should be a concern. And while it's buoyed by a Tegra 3 chip, its overly thick build makes it less appealing. The $299 price point puts it between the $200 Nexus 7 and the $380 Transformer Pad TF300, both of which I'd recommend over the A2109. Both the Nexus 7 and TF300 offer better screens, thinner designs, and the newest version of Android, 4.1 "Jelly Bean." The A2109 isn't a bad choice per se, but there's really no reason to settle for mediocrity when better options abound.

DOD: US military casualties in Afghanistan as of Oct.19, 2012

Another six US soldiers were killed in Afghanistan during the past week. The casualties continue to occur in southern Afghanistan, Kandahar and Helmand provinces or in the east, as 106 US soldiers were wounded in action (WIA).

According to casualties.org 359 NATO troops have been killed so far this year. Afghanistan continues to be a hostile environment and the main cause of death is insurgent attacks, roadside bombs and suicide bombers.

With the impending withdrawal deadline, the TalibanTaliban and al-Qaida have intensified their attacks on the civilian population, especially in the south. There are also the increasing attacks, characterized as "green-on-blue" attacks, where Afghans in police or military uniforms have attacked NATO troops that are either mentoring or training them. The combined training was suspended for almost a week, before it was resumed. Last night another six Afghan police officers were killed in a "green-on-blue" attack.

Decentralized cells of al-Qaida have spread throughout North Africa, the Arab world, Afghanistan and Pakistan. While the killing of Osama bin Laden diminished al-Qaida's central operations, the terror group has changed its method of operating. This shift has been ongoing for some time. The Taliban and al-Qaida realized long ago that they could not confront a larger NATO force and be successful. The decentralized attacks, however, have changed the battle.

The general public in the US and NATO nations is war-weary. More than a decade of a war, which doesn't appear to have yielded any positive results, has been a costly venture in both monetary and lives. In 2011 alone there were over 3,000 civilian casualties and just slightly more wounded. These estimates, according to Wikepedia, which provides a detailed report on civilians by year, are likely underestimated.

More than 40 percent of casualties are attributed to IEDs so far this year, according to iCasualties. How long will this go on and to what end? Politicians and senior military officials have not been able to answer this questions. There have been assertions that the Afghan strategy is working and that Afghan Security Forces are increasingly taking over the responsibility for their own security. This flies in the face of the reality on the ground and recent comments by Hamid Karzai. Talks with the Taliban have broken down and their attacks have become increasingly violent and cruel.

There is no doubt that the war will end in 2014. NATO capitals and the US administration have made that clear. Without tangible progress in the war-torn nation, the faith has been put into Afghans to manage their own country, including security. Economically that is impossible and militarily it appears to be a pipe dream.

Afghanistan and victory will never be uttered in the same sentence. The US and NATO should cut their losses and get out of Afghanistan sooner rather than later.

As the toll of American soldiers in both deaths and wounded warriors continues to climb, there are also thousands with mental scars. As a society we have an obligation to support the survivors of this war and their families. Both the Canadian and American government have not done enough in this regard. Lest We Forget.

Asset Protection Planning: How effective is ... - MS Estate Planning

In short, offshore asset protection is very effective. ?Done properly, an offshore asset trust can frustrate and defeat collection efforts of the most powerful creditors in the U.S., including the Internal Revenue Service. ?Again, the planning must be done at a time when the client is not under financial duress. ?Also, this type of planning has been effective in divorce proceedings, as a state court divorce judge has no jurisdiction over a foreign trustee.

(AP) ? Some Colorado fans are upset after music superstar Madonna used guns during a performance.

Madonna started her show Thursday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver with a gun scene, which she has used in previous performances.

According to KUSA-TV (http://tinyurl.com/8kr7gdq ), the station received several calls Friday from concert-goers saying they were offended she used guns and violence as part of her show in light of recent events in the state that included a mass shooting at a theater during a Batman movie on July 20 that left 12 people dead.

In a statement before beginning the tour, Madonna said she does not condone the use of guns. She said she is using the guns as symbols of intolerance and "the pain I have felt from having my heart broken."

Feature Friday: Talk of the House | Southern Hospitality

I love featuring all sorts of houses on my Feature Friday series, from modern, to cottage, traditional, French country, new country, eclectic, there are so many design styles out there that I enjoy.? When I ran across Kelly?s blog, Talk of the House, a fairly new blog this year, I was really impressed with her home and how she designed it herself.? It?s warm and cozy, a 1996 Southern Living home plan that she and her hubby built themselves.? Kelly confesses to being a house lover as far back as 10, when she collected house plan books.? She wanted to study interior design, but ended up being a teacher and has been teaching students for 30 years.? Blogging is her creative outlet and after reading blogs for a few years, she decided to jump in the mix and share her own creativity.? And I?m glad she did!? Kelly?s blog is full of beauty and inspiration and she?s a Southern girl, so I can definitely relate.

She lives somewhere South of Atlanta in middle Georgia and her home reflects the rural beauty of her surroundings.

Front-porch-decorated-for-fall-Talk-of-the-House-1024x682(pp_w725_h482)

Her home from the outside, is right at home in the trees and what I imagine to be a beautiful countryside.? I love cottage homes like this and you certainly can?t go wrong with a Southern Living plan.? If I could choose the perfect exterior of a home, it would be a similar cottage look like this one.

backdoor-hooks-at-Talk-of-the-House-682x1024

Inside the back door, this is where Kelly?s guests mostly enter.

And this pretty antique is in the front door entry area, a beautiful welcome to guests.

kitchen

Kelly?s kitchen isn?t too large, but very functional and pretty with a country cottage aesthetic.

Check out the beadboard ceiling.

Her cabinets are simple, but elegant in white.? You can see she chose wisely when building her house.

bedroom hallway

Looking down the hallway to the master bedroom, lots of board and batten are added for such a pretty architectural detail. Love those hanging fixtures too.

board and batten master

A cute country bench in the hallway is set against the board and batten.? Kelly loves blues, reds, and khakis, with black as an accent.

master

Her master bedroom is accented in blue and red with khaki painted plank walls that her hubby did for her.? So pretty!

bath tub

As well as a clawfoot tub, it?s the picture perfect modern country bathroom.

September-table-with-centerpiece-Talk-of-the-House-1024x682(pp_w725_h482)

The dining room has a very nice view.? Kelly has made many of her own drapery panels and they look great in her home.

A cute sentiment on the chalkboard.

porch-for-fall-1024x669(pp_w725_h473)

A spacious screened porch is such a lovely place to gather.? Kelly told me she loves entertaining and throws lots of parties.

4th of July

Like a 4th of July bash.

Complete with red, white and blue dessert on a plate.

She helped with her niece?s very beautiful rural wedding, all decked out in a rustic old barn.

rehearsal-dinner-in-barn-682x1024(pp_w614_h921)

These weddings are gaining in popularity and I love how unique they are.? Check out these beautiful table settings.

letterpressed-invitation-1024x682(pp_w655_h436)

Kelly is also a master calligrapher and hand letters invitations for special folks in her life. She hand lettered a whole bunch of wedding invitations for that niece and what a treat that was!? Calligraphy is a beautiful artform and one that I?m not skilled in at all.

So, I know you enjoyed this beautiful tour of Kelly?s Georgia home as much as I did.? Kelly has fantastic taste and artfully decorates her own home in a very traditional, yet warm way and I hope you?ll all stop by and say hello to Kelly.? She might be a teacher, but she?s loving the blog community.

Navy to go after rats, mold in Gitmo legal offices

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba (AP) ? Legal offices that are so contaminated with mold and rat droppings that lawyers in the Sept. 11 terrorism trial have been getting sick will get a full clean-up and be evaluated by safety experts, a military official said Thursday.

A "comprehensive" cleaning of the offices, which are primarily used by defense teams in the Guantanamo Bay tribunals, will begin by the end of the month and be finished in time for a hearing scheduled in December, said Army Capt. Michael Lebowitz, one of the prosecutors in the case of five prisoners charged in the Sept. 11 attacks.

"It's almost like a fresh start," Lebowitz told the case judge, who has been fielding complaints about the offices this week while presiding over a pretrial hearing at the U.S. base in Cuba.

The issue of the contaminated offices has repeatedly interrupted progress on more than two dozen pretrial motions this week. Defense lawyers had sought to postpone the hearing outright, which would have further delayed a case that has been plagued by delays.

A base official declared the offices unsafe in September because of mold and other problems, then the space was declared safe several weeks later after a cleaning. But lawyers distributed photos this week showing the walls and air conditioning units coated with mildew and mold as well as floors littered with what appear to be mouse and rat droppings. Pictures also showed a dead crab and lizard, both common at the tropical base on the Caribbean Sea.

It is more than just aesthetics, lawyers said. Since late 2011, several members of the Sept. 11 defense team have suffered from fatigue and respiratory and eye ailments after trips to Guantanamo Bay.

"Each time I travel to Guantanamo Bay I suffer from increased respiratory and eye problems that have landed me in the Guantanamo emergency room," said Cheryl Bormann, a lawyer for Walid Bin Attash, who is one of the five men charged with planning and aiding the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil.

Legal office space, which must meet security requirements because the attorneys and their staff handle classified evidence, is in short supply at Guantanamo. The defense teams were forced to cram into a much smaller work space while preparing for the weeklong hearing, which has dealt largely with disputes over the rules for gathering evidence in a trial that is likely more than a year away.

Bormann told the judge she welcomed the military's proposal for a major clean-up and an evaluation by outside health experts. "We want it fixed and we want it fixed right," she said.

The judge, Army Col. James Pohl, had appeared to grow frustrated at the continuing complaints and welcomed a step that he hoped would resolve the issue. "Obviously, if it doesn't, I'll hear," he said.

Among the five men facing charges that include terrorism and murder is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has previously told authorities that he was the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Mohammed, who delivered a five-minute lecture Wednesday denouncing the U.S. for killing "millions" in the name of national security, stayed silent during Thursday's court session.

The judge heard arguments on defense motions to change rules for gathering evidence and calling witnesses that defense lawyers said will make it impossible to fairly defend their clients, who could get the death penalty if convicted. Among their complaints is that the rules would prevent defendants from seeing some of the classified evidence against them.

"This is a capital case. His life is literally at stake in it," said David Nevin, the lawyer for the lead defendant. "Mr. Mohammed should be able to see everything."

The defense and prosecution also sparred over the question of the extent to which the U.S. Constitution applies to the prisoners charged in special tribunals for wartime offenses.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the base in Cuba, because it is under U.S. control, is generally covered by the Constitution except when circumstances are deemed "impracticable and anomalous" and cannot be enforced.

The defense has asked the judge to issue an advisory opinion setting out to what extent the Constitution applies to the proceedings since some of their challenges will raise constitutional issues. The prosecution said it is too early to make such a finding.

Pohl did not rule on the issue and the hearing was to continue Friday.

(AP) ? The commander of U.S. forces in Japan apologized Friday for a case in which two American sailors allegedly raped a woman in Okinawa and said all U.S. military personnel in the country will now be subject to a curfew and other restrictions.

A statement released by U.S. Forces Japan says the 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew will apply to U.S. military personnel whether they are stationed in Japan or just visiting. It requires them to be in their homes, on base or wherever they are lodging.

Lt. Gen. Salvatore Angelella said U.S. military members in Japan also will have to take "core values training." The military's liberty policy is also under review.

Japan's defense minister, Satoshi Morimoto, told reporters earlier Friday that he was instructed by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, "to fully discuss the matter with the U.S. side and come up with measures to eradicate the problem so that crimes like this are never repeated again."

The two sailors were in Okinawa on a brief stopover and are now in Japanese custody. According to Japanese media, they had been drinking before they attacked the woman, in her 20s, who was on her way home before dawn Tuesday.

The case has drawn protests from the Japanese government and an outcry on Okinawa, where the presence of U.S. military has long been a sore point. The island hosts more than half the 47,000 U.S. troops in Japan.

"I want to personally apologize for the grief and trauma the victim has endured and the anger it has caused among the people of Okinawa," Angelella told reporters.

Angelella said American military personnel are "held to a higher standard."

Both he and U.S. Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos said the U.S. will cooperate in the Okinawan police investigation. Roos said the U.S. government viewed the situation with "utmost seriousness."

"We will put forward every effort to make sure that incidents like this do not happen," Roos said.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has begun its own investigation, although Japan has primary jurisdiction.

Seaman Christopher Browning of Athens, Texas, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Skyler Dozierwalker of Muskogee, Okla., were arrested Tuesday. Both are 23, joined the military in 2008 and are assigned to Joint Naval Air Station, Fort Worth, Texas.

The latest case has inflamed chronic tensions between the U.S. military and Okinawa over base-related crimes and other issues. Okinawans also have been protesting plans to deploy the Marine Corps' MV-22 Osprey to a base there because of safety concerns.

Local opposition to the U.S. bases over noise, safety concerns and crime flared into mass protests after the 1995 rape of a schoolgirl by three American servicemen. That outcry eventually led to an agreement to close a major Marine airfield, but that plan has stalled for more than a decade over where a replacement facility should be located.

Are you - like me - too lazy to make Sushi rolls yourself? Why not try this delicious Sushi Salad?

About a week ago, I had this massive craving for Sushi.

Unfortunately, it is pretty expensive when you want to eat more than just 6 tiny rolls. I thought about making it myself again (once did a few years ago and I hated it!) and searched for an easy recipe. I had hoped to find some hints and tricks to make it easier and quicker. And guess what I found? This delicious recipe for "Sushi Salad"! It's really easy and so delicious, I will definitely make this again very soon!

Basic ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 100 g rice (either Sushi rice or regular rice which is less expensive)
  • 150 ml water
  • 25 ml (about 2 and a half table spoons) rice vinegar
  • 1 tea spoon sugar
  • a hint of salt
  • 100 g shrimp
  • 100 g salmon (smoked or raw)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 3 nori leaves
  • 1 table spoon sushi ginger
  • 2 limes
  • 1/2 tea spoon wasabi (or more or less depending on how hot you like it)
  • 1 table spoon soy sauce
  • 1 table spoon sweet chili sauce

100 ml are about 3.4 fluid oz - as for the rest, I used what I thought was ok to add and how much was in a box when I bought it *lol*

If you don't like salmon, you can substitute it with canned tuna or leave it (and the shrimps) out completely if you don't like sea food. You can also add everything that you love to have as sushi, e.g. tofu, tomato, bell pepper, avocado, spring onions... and so much more!

Preparation

Wash and boil the rice according to the instructions, most likely your rice needs to be boiled about 15 minutes. Pour the water and let the rice cool down while you prepare the "marinade" for the rice:

Mix the rice vinegar with the sugar, a dash of salt and add it to the rice. From time to time, stir the rice while it is cooling down and you have time to cut down the other ingredients.

So, cut the cucumber and any other ingredients you want to add (I LOVE the avocado!), add the smoked salmon and the shrimps and cut the nori leaves into small pieces. Use a scissor for the nori leaves! Add the ginger.

Mix the juice from the 2 limes (or use lemon juice!) with wasabi, soy sauce and sweet chili sauce. Mix it really well and then add to the ingredients. Then add the rice and mix carefully.

That's it already!

Keep it in the fridge until you serve it, especially when you use raw salmon!

This is also a great idea for any potluck idea - I bet it will be a special contribution to any party.

Cuban missile crisis beliefs endure after 50 years

HAVANA (AP) ? The world stood at the brink of Armageddon for 13 days in October 1962 when President John F. Kennedy drew a symbolic line in the Atlantic and warned of dire consequences if Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev dared to cross it.

An American U-2 spy plane flying high over Cuba had snapped aerial photographs of Soviet ballistic missile sites that could launch nuclear warheads with little warning at the United States, just 90 miles away. It was the height of the Cold War, and many people feared nuclear war would annihilate human civilization.

Soviet ships carrying nuclear equipment steamed toward Kennedy's "quarantine" zone around the island, but turned around before reaching the line. "We're eyeball-to-eyeball, and I think the other fellow just blinked," U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk famously said, a quote that largely came to be seen as defining the crisis.

In the five decades since the nuclear standoff between Washington and Moscow, much of the long-held conventional wisdom about the missile crisis has been knocked down, including the common belief that Kennedy's bold brinksmanship ruled the day.

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis, historians now say it was behind-the-scenes compromise rather than a high-stakes game of chicken that resolved the faceoff, that both Washington and Moscow wound up winners and that the crisis lasted far longer than 13 days.

Declassified documents, oral histories and accounts from decision-makers involved in the standoff have turned up new information that scholars say provides lessons for leaders embroiled in contemporary crises such as the one in Syria, where President Bashar Assad has ignored international pleas to stop attacks on civilians in an uprising that has killed more than 32,000 people.

Another modern standoff is over Iran, which the West accuses of pursuing a nuclear weapons program. In a recent U.N. speech, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drew a red line on a cartoon bomb to illustrate that a nuclear Tehran would not be tolerated.

"Take Iran, which I have called a Cuban Missile Crisis in slow motion," said Graham Allison, author of the groundbreaking study of governmental decision-making "Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis."

"This same process is looming on the current trajectory, inexorably, toward a confrontation at which an American president is going to have to choose between attacking Iran to prevent it becoming a nuclear weapons state or acquiescing and then confronting a nuclear weapons state," Allison said.

"Kennedy's idea would be, 'Don't let this reach the point of confrontation,'" he added. "The risks of catastrophe are too great."

Among the common beliefs about the Cuban missile crisis that have been reevaluated:

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: The crisis was a triumph of U.S. brinkmanship.

REALITY: Historians say the resolution of the standoff was really a triumph of backdoor diplomacy.

Kennedy resisted pressure from aides advising that he cede nothing to Moscow and even consider a preemptive strike. He instead engaged in intense behind-the-scenes diplomacy with the Soviets, other countries and the U.N. secretary-general.

Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy met secretly with the Soviet ambassador on Oct. 27 and conveyed an olive branch from his brother: Washington would publicly reject any invasion of Cuba, and Khrushchev would withdraw the missiles from the island. The real sweetener was that Kennedy would withdraw Jupiter nuclear missiles from U.S. installations in Turkey, near the Soviet border. It was a secret pledge known only to a handful of presidential advisers that did not emerge until years later.

"As the historical record has expanded, the image of the resolute president has given way to the resolution president," Cuba analyst Peter Kornbluh wrote in an article in the November issue of Cigar Aficionado, an advance copy of which was made available to The Associated Press.

Nevertheless, the brinkmanship myth persists, with President George W. Bush in 2002 citing the missile crisis as a historical lesson in fortitude that justified a preemptive invasion of Iraq.

"The storyline is a lot easier that Kennedy stood steely-resolved, faced Khrushchev down and that's it," said Allison, a professor at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and former senior defense adviser to several Democratic and Republican administrations. "If you hang tough enough the other guy will eventually yield ? that is actually the lesson that became part of the popular mythology."

____

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: Washington won, and Moscow lost.

REALITY: The United States came out a winner, but so did the Soviet Union.

The Jupiter missiles are sometimes described as nearly obsolete, but they had come online just months earlier and were fully capable of striking into the Soviet Union. Their withdrawal, along with Kennedy's assurance he would not invade Cuba, gave Khrushchev enough to feel he had saved face and the following day he announced the imminent dismantling of offensive weapons in Cuba.

Soon after, a U.S.-Soviet presidential hotline was established and the two nations initiated discussions that led to the Limited Test Ban treaty and ultimately the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

"The major lesson is the necessity of compromise even when faced with a crisis like that," said Robert Pastor, an international relations professor at American University and former national security adviser for Latin America under President Jimmy Carter.

Pastor said he had many discussions about the missile crisis over the years with his late father-in-law, Robert McNamara, who was Kennedy's defense secretary. Pastor said domestic politics made it tough for both Kennedy and successive presidents to heed that lesson, as evidenced by Kennedy's intense efforts to keep the deal secret.

President Barack Obama, for example, faces considerable pressure to maintain a tough line on Cuba. Among the issues are the U.S. embargo, demands for political change, an American government subcontractor imprisoned in Cuba as an alleged spy and five Cuban intelligence agents serving long sentences in the United States.

"Look at U.S.-Cuban relations right now," Pastor said. "I don't think Obama would consider a compromise, because the pressure on him that 'You gave in to the Cubans' is too great."

__

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: It was a high-seas showdown.

REALITY: It's true the missile crisis was full of tense moments. On Oct. 27, a U.S. warship dropped depth charges over a nuclear-armed Soviet sub and the Soviets shot down a U-2 spy plane over Cuba. It was "the darkest, most dangerous day of the crisis," Kornbluh said.

Yet after Kennedy on Oct. 22 announced a U.S. naval quarantine around the island to prevent more military equipment from arriving, Khrushchev recalled ships carrying nuclear equipment the following day, according to the 2008 book "One Minute to Midnight" by Michael Dobbs, which was based on newly examined Soviet documents.

That means that on Oct. 24, when Secretary of State Rusk made his famous "eyeball-to-eyeball" statement reacting to supposedly up-to-the-minute intelligence, the vessels were already hundreds of miles away, steaming home.

"This thing about eyeball-to-eyeball, it never was. That confrontation never took place," said Kornbluh, who is a Cuba analyst at the nongovernment National Security Archive, which has spent decades working to get missile crisis documents declassified.

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: It was an intelligence coup for the CIA.

REALITY: Along with being a day late on the turnaround by Soviet ships, the CIA missed several key developments that would have helped Kennedy and his advisers navigate the crisis.

The CIA learned late in the game about the ballistic missiles' presence in Cuba, and they were already operational by the time Kennedy was informed of their existence.

The agency was also unaware of other, tactical nuclear missiles in Cuba that could have been deployed against a U.S. attack. The Soviets had even positioned nuclear-tipped missiles on a ridge above the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay in preparation for an invasion.

"They were going to obliterate the base," Kornbluh said.

___

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM: The crisis lasted just 13 days.

REALITY: This myth has been perpetuated in part by the title of Robert F. Kennedy's posthumous memoir, "Thirteen Days," as well as the 2000 movie of the same name starring Kevin Costner.

Indeed it was 13 days from Oct. 16, when Kennedy was first told about the missiles, to Oct. 28, when the Soviets announced their withdrawal.

But the "October Crisis," as it is known in Cuba, dragged on for another tense month or so in what Kornbluh dubs the "November Extension," as Washington and Moscow haggled over details of exactly what weapons would be removed.

The Soviet Union also had problems dealing with Fidel Castro, according to a Soviet document made public this month by Svetlana Savranskaya, a Russia analyst for the National Security Archive.

Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoyan traveled to Cuba that Nov. 2 and spent 20 days in tense talks with the Cuban leader, who was angry the Soviets had reached a deal without consulting him. Castro lobbied hard but unsuccessfully to keep the tactical nuclear weapons that the Americans had not learned about.
