Here's our best guess at the drink. Not exact, but a good drink that uses lemon instead of lime (which is a nice change up).

1 oz fresh lemon juice
1 1/2 oz fresh orange juice
1 oz mango juice
1/2 oz Bols Orange Curacao
1/2 oz sugar syrup/honey mix
1/4 oz Orgeat
1 oz white appleton
1 oz red label appleton

Mix the ingredients together. Pack a glass with crushed ice. Pour in drink and stir until glass frosts. Garnish with a slice of orange rind.

Posted: 2005-06-06 9:49 pm??&nbspPermalink Had a chance to partake of this drink along with some cribbage and exotica records at I, Zombies pad the other night, and I can vouch for the quality of this recipe. I'm not sure if it's exactly like the Mai Kai Swizzle, since it's been months since I've had the real thing. But one thing that worked well was not shaking the drink--rather, pouring it into the crushed ice and swizzling it. It had a rich, fruity, almost creamy texture very reminiscent of a typical Mai Kai drink. Somehow, it tastes even better if you have "The Versatile Mancini" spinning in the background... &nbspView Profile of Quince_at_Dannys Send a personal message to Quince_at_Dannys&nbsp ?? ?Edit/Delete This Post Reply with quote Hurricane Hayward

Posted: 2 days ago; 12:35 am??&nbspPermalink Once again, an old Tiki Central thread comes in handy as we continue our journey through the Mai-Kai cocktail menu.

The Mai-Kai Swizzle, which dates back to 1956, is likely a descendant of the Donn Beach classic Don's Swizzle.

Check out the review and tribute recipe ...

I, Zombie was on the right track. We just tweaked some of the ingredients and proportions to come up with another great Mai-Kai tribute recipe.

Okole maluna!

I am going to change the "Basement Kahuna's Recipes" to just "Other Recipes" soon.

Sounds like we need to discuss at The Hukilau over a few Black Magics. Which leads me to my next review. Hold onto your fez, this one's gonna be good.

STUDY: HAPPINESS CAUSES DEPRESSION | Weekly World News

A groundbreaking new study revealed today that happiness may be a cause for depression.

Studies show that there is a darker side to feeling good and that the pursuit of happiness can sometimes make you?.?.?. depressed. ?Too much happiness will make you gullible, selfish, less successful and, in some cases, suicidal.

Happiness does have benefits. It can protect us from stroke and the common cold, makes us more resistant to pain and even prolongs our lives. Yet, June Gruber, a professor of psychology at Yale University who has studied happiness,?warns that it?s important to experience positive moods in moderation.

She compares happiness to food: Although necessary and beneficial, too much food can cause problems; likewise, happiness can lead to bad outcomes. ?Research indicates that very high levels of positive feelings predict risk-taking behaviors, excess alcohol and drug consumption, binge eating, and may lead us to neglect threats,? she says.

?You don?t want to eat too much cake or broccoli or meat. ?Too much is bad. ?Less is more. ?And that goes for happiness, too.?

How else can excessive joy, or having lots of positive emotions and a relative absence of negative ones, hurt you?

First, it may hamper your career prospects. Psychologist Edward Diener, renowned for his happiness research, and his colleagues analyzed a variety of studies, including data from more than 16,000 people around the world, and discovered that those who early in their lives reported the highest life satisfaction (for example, judging it at 5 on a 5-point scale) years later reported lower-income than those who felt slightly less merry when young. What?s more, they dropped out of school earlier.

Psychologists point out that emotions are adaptive: They make us change behavior to help us survive. Anger prepares us to fight; fear helps us flee. But what about sadness? Studies show that when we are sad, we think in a more systematic manner. Sad people are attentive to details and externally oriented, while happy people tend to make snap judgments that may reflect racial or sex stereotyping.

In a 2005 study in the Journal of Personality and Happiness, University of Chicago psychologist Gwen Bolden asked 94 student to ?get happy?? ?really happy.? ?The students did everything they could possible do to make themselves happy ? including sex, drugs and rock n? roll ? but soon after, the students were ?depressed.?

?See happiness needs to be controlled. Too much will make you depressed and cause you to stay in bed and watch reality TV all day. ? Better to be a little happy or even a little sad. ?Too much happiness is no good.?

Mary J. Blige blasted for Burger King ad

Getty Images

By Courtney Garcia, TODAY.com contributor

A Burger King commercial featuring Mary J. Blige?singing about chicken was pulled from company's YouTube channel Tuesday, though the company denied the action was due to heavy criticism.

The company said the ad was pulled?due to ?licensing issues,? but did not specify what those issues were. The company said it hoped to have the Blige ads back soon, but wouldn't say if they would be edited, the Associated Press reported.

The commercial features Blige standing?on top of a table?at the fast-food chain, microphone in hand, singing about the franchise?s crispy chicken wrap. (As of press time, you could still watch?the ad?at Gawker.)

David Beckham, Jay Leno, Salma Hayek and others also appear?in new?Burger King ads selling what the company calls a healthier menu. The Blige ad was criticized for invoking the stereotype involving African-Americans and chicken as well as the fact that Blige's?ode to chicken is sung to the tune of her song "Don't Mind," which may indeed be the cause of the "licensing issues" mentioned by the company.

?You still have so much more to contribute to the arts and entertainment game that there was no reason for you to stoop to stereotypes," Renay Alize wrote to Blige in a post at Madame Noire. ?"And I know what you?re thinking, everybody across the world loves chicken. It?s true, most people get down with the poultry; but as a black woman, singing passionately about chicken is?not?the move!?

Rich Juzwiak at Gawker?wrote that?mocking of the ad was "approaching meme levels," but pointed out?that actress Octavia Spencer wasn't criticized for?rhapsodizing about cooking chicken in the hit movie "The Help." Juzwiak also wrote, "if the issue is with Blige selling out, well, that's been happening for years," pointing out that the singer has sold fragrances on the QVC shopping channel in the past.

Marketing consultant Steve Stoute, who has worked closely with Blige, tweeted, ?The issue is the burger king commercial is that these agencies visit culture and then do work that is so inauthentic it's embarrassing."

But some find merit in the controversy.

?The Burger King spot ? blasphemous as many thought it was ? did something her recent career moves haven?t been able to do: They got people talking about Mary J. Blige again,? journalist Adam Graham?wrote in?The Detroit News. ?And if fans debate that she?s above doing fast food ads, maybe it leads to a renewed appreciation of her talents and what she should stand for, which in the end isn?t all that bad.?

Representatives of Blige have yet to comment on the matter.

Do you think the ad was a bad idea? Vote in our poll, and tell us on Facebook.

What do you think of the Mary J. Blige Burger King chicken ad?

Rome cracks down on marauding centurions

The city has given a deadline of April 6 for the tourist terrors to clear away from the Colosseum area.

By Adam L. Freeman,?Contributor / April 2, 2012

Rome has given the centurions a deadline to clear out. The solders in question aren't from the ranks of an ancient legion, but are modern-day performers who pose for tourist?photos at the Colosseum.

Men and women decked out in chest plates and helmets eke out a?tax-free living at Rome?s most popular attraction, posing for photos with foreign?visitors for 5 or 10 euros. Disoriented, jet lagged, or simply scared,?tourists have been known to pay up to 50 euros ($67). Some have been roughed?up when they refuse.

Arrests were made last summer in an undercover operation with police?in tunics and sandals handcuffing centurions and gladiators for?ripping off tourists. A recent Italian media report cited a policeman?as saying the centurions are all ex-convicts, ?every last one of?them.?

Now the city government says ?basta!? and wants them to pack up their?swords, shields, and ensigns and clear out by April 6.

?This will end badly. We?ll wage a revolution. We?ll burn down the?Coliseum rather than move from here,? a 21st-century centurion?recently told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.

Along with the fake ancient Roman soldiers, the city aims to rid?itself of the vast illegal industry of food and souvenir vendors that?feeds off the 6 million people who every year visit the site where?Russell Crowe avenged his family?s murder in the 2000 sword-and-sandal blockbuster "Gladiator."

City and national officials say they are defending?Rome-the-living-museum from an image akin to theme parks where?visitors feast on fast food and ham it up for the camera with?fairytale characters.

But the Italian economy is in recession and its prisons overcrowded so government bureaucrats should be vigilant for unrest?in the legionary ranks. They might want to reconsider a plan that puts?ex-cons out of work.
