Does a military solution for Somali piracy work?

Somali pirate attacks have dropped, from 45 in 2010 to 24 in 2011, but there's no evidence that more naval patrols and aggressive private security firms are actually keeping pirates ashore.?

To some, the solution to Somali piracy is blindingly obvious. Patrol the seas. Capture the pirates. Send them to the briny deep. If it worked on the Barbary Coast, it should work in Somalia.

But with Somali pirates going further out to sea, such a solution is more difficult than it sounds. Patrolling the narrow waters of the Gulf of Aden ? as the European Naval Force and some other countries such as China, India, Japan, Russia, and Taiwan are doing ? is relatively simple. Patrolling the much broader Indian Ocean, where Somali pirates have moved, is more difficult.

And for those pirate crews who do get captured, there?s one more consideration. Where do you take them for trial? Very few nations ? none of them, interestingly, in the countries providing naval patrols off the Somali coast ? have taken Somali pirates to put them on trial. Most pirates who do get captured are simply disarmed, dragged in their skiffs closer to Somali shores, and released.

As a Guardian headline this week sums it up, ?Outgunned Somali pirates can hardly believe their luck.?

Not all of the navies patrolling for pirates use gentle methods, of course. In November 2008, the Indian Navy sank a pirate ship in the Gulf of Aden. Russian Navy sailors apparently captured a Somali pirate ship earlier this year, and blew it up afterward. The video of this action went viral, alleging that the Russian sailors blew up the ship with the pirates on board, but there is no proof of that. (Advisory note: the video contains violence and may be difficult for sensitive viewers to watch). And on March 25, 2011, private security guards aboard a commercial freighter called the Avocet opened fire on an apparent Somali pirate crew aboard a skiff. The pirates never made it aboard the ship, but the video stirred controversy about the use of force in commercial shipping.

Does militarizing the seas actually deter piracy? The data don?t provide easy answers.

Since 2008, Somali pirate gangs have launched more than 800 attacks on commercial ships, with 170 ships hijacked, and 3,400 sailors held for ransom. Shipping firms have paid more than $530 million on private security firms during that time period, and $160 million was paid out to pirate gangs last year alone.

That, clearly, is the reason Somali gangs get into the pirate business. Do a few well-armed security guards onboard commercial ships, or a few naval patrol ships deter those pirates from taking to the high seas? Some point to the dropping number of pirate attacks ? from 45 attacks in 2010 to 24 in 2011 ? as a sign that naval patrolling and private security may be working.

Snooki, JWoww 'Proud' Of President Obama For Supporting Gay Marriage

'I'm glad that he did it — better late than never,' 'Jersey Shore' star JWoww tells MTV News.
By Christina Garibaldi

President Obama made history earlier this week when he became the first president to support same-sex marriage. Moments after the announcement, reactions came pouring in from celebrities and other supporters of his decision expressing their overwhelming enthusiasm regarding the much-discussed topic.

Two of those supporters include "Jersey Shore" stars Snooki and JWoww, who stopped by MTV News on Thursday and told us that they were thrilled with President Obama's latest move, even though they feel it should have come earlier in his presidency.

"I'm glad that he did it — better late than never," JWoww said. "And he is the first president to come out and say it, and I am proud of him for doing it."

Snooki, who's expecting her first child with fiancé Jionni LaValle, feels that same-sex couples should enjoy the same rights she does.

"We're very strong when it comes to the gay community," Snooki said. "[JWoww] has a lot of friends; her best friend is gay. I have a lot of friends who are gay. They need to be equal because they are amazing friends."

President Obama's announcement came on the heels of the gay-marriage ban in North Carolina, a move that angered many who believe that in this day and age everyone should have equal rights.

"We just need the laws to change — it's 2012," JWoww said. "I want to see my best friend get married, and I want to see everyone in every state be able to get married. It's their choice. It's not affecting our lives. So let them be equal. We want them to be able to experience life, and if they want to be miserable and married, let them be miserable and married like us."

What do you think of Obama's support of same-sex marriage? Let us know in the comments!

Russell Brand To Host 2012 MTV Movie Awards

Two-time VMA host will lead the festivities Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.

Actor, comedian and two-time Video Music Awards emcee Russell Brand will be your host for the 2012 MTV Movie Awards when they air live from the Gibson Amphitheatre on Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

The star of the upcoming film "Rock of Ages" will lead the fan-voted awards, which celebrate the year's biggest films.

"This MTV Movie Awards will be more impressive than 'The Avengers' and you won't have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out," said Russell Brand.

"MTV Movie Awards incorporates two of my favorite things. Movies and Awards. If somehow group sex could be involved it would be the greatest night of my life."

Jesse Ignjatovic, the executive producer for the show, spoke with MTV News about Brand and why he was a clear choice as host. "First of all, I think Russell's the perfect host for this show," said Ignjatovic, who previously worked with Brand during his two stints hosting the VMAs. "He's a movie star. He's probably one of the most brilliant stand-ups that I've seen in his time, and he's a rock star."

And it's that rock-and-roll attitude that Ignjatovic said will play an important role in this year's show, which will highlight the ties between music and film with performances from groups like Fun.

Ignjatovic added that Brand's ability to riff off the unscripted moments in the show really excites him. "Whatever we end up creating around him within the show, he brings that danger thing as well," Ignjatovic said. "We'd love for the show to live there, where you don't know how he's going to react to something in the moment. He's so sharp and witty and on his game that that's an exciting place to live."

But when it really comes down to it, what makes Brand the right host, according to Ignjatovic, is his comedy.

"He has amazing comedic chops. He's brilliant. He touches all of the areas that I think are important to us," he said. "Add to that I think he's one of the most professional people I've worked with in terms of comedians. He's well-studied and very dedicated to his craft. I think we're very fortunate that he said 'yes.' "

Head over to MovieAwards.MTV.com to vote for your favorite flicks now! The 21st annual MTV Movie Awards air live Sunday, June 3, at 9 p.m. ET.

Joss Whedon Pens Open Letter to Fans

joss-whedon-samuel-l-jackson-the-avengers-slice

Before The Avengers, Joss Whedon had created three canceled TV series, but still found ways to wrap up Angel and Dollhouse despite the lack of a series renewal, and Firefly got a big screen ending with Serenity (Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn?t canceled and continues to live on in comics).? Despite never landing a big, mainstream hit, his fans have always stuck by Whedon and revered him with a fervent devotion.? Now that The Avengers has set the record for highest-grossing opening weekend ($207 million was the final tally), his career is about to change dramatically. ?However, he hasn?t forgotten his loyal following, and he took to his official fan site to thank his beloved Whedonites.

Hit the jump for Whedon?s Thank-You letter for his fans, and look for my editorial tomorrow about why Marvel needs to lock down Whedon for The Avengers 2.

the-avengers-joss-whedon-captain-america-shield-imageClick over to Whedonesque for the fake Q&A Whedon provided after his Thank-You Letter.

Dear Friends,

Well, it?s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can?t wait! But before I become blinded by this ?emotion? experience, there?s a few things I?d like to say. Well, type.

People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good ? change is exciting. I think ? not to jinx it ? that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of ?the Avengers? gross, I can afford to buy? [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] ?a fine meal. But REALLY fine, with truffles and s#!+. And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of ?Air Bud? that we all feel is so long overdue. (He could play Jai Alai! Think of the emotional ramifications of JAI ALAI!!!!)

What doesn?t change is anything that matters. What doesn?t change is that I?ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of ? I?m not even gonna say fans. I?m going with ?peeps? ? that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I?ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y?all. A lot of stories have come out about my ?dark years?, and how I?m ?unrecognized?? I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I?m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I?ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating. I?ve thought, ?maybe I?m over; maybe I?ve said my piece?. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y?all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you?re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I?m an alien, not a robot.) So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You?ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go ?I told you so?, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered. So please welcome my old friend and certainly not-on-my-payroll reporter/flunky, Rutherford D. Actualperson!

Tom Gabel Comes Out As Transgender: In Praise Of Bravery

Why the Against Me! singer's decision to live as a woman is also a genuine act of courage, in Bigger Than the Sound.
By James Montgomery

Tom Gabel of Against Me!

Tom Gabel probably didn't want to be praised for her decision to come out as transgender; she just wanted to be comfortable in her own body. But I'm going to praise her anyway.

Because when Gabel announced to Rolling Stone on Tuesday that she planned to begin living as a woman — after struggling privately with gender dysphoria for years — it was undoubtedly the most personal thing a major recording artist has ever gone public with, an admission that's sure to make her the target of cruel insults and petty insinuations (to say nothing about what it might mean for the future of her band, Against Me!). But rather than focus on the close-mindedness of a select few, it is certainly more worthwhile — not to mention important — to laud Gabel for what is, in its purest form, a genuine act of bravery.

To be fair, Gabel is not the first musician to come out as transgender. In the 1970s, electronic artist Walter Carlos announced that he, too, suffered from gender dysphoria and underwent sexual reassignment surgery to live life as Wendy Carlos. And just last year, Life of Agony singer Keith Caputo made headlines when he became Mina Caputo. But Gabel's case is different. Since her earliest days, she has always been a punk pariah, criticized for "selling out" at every step of her career.

I got the sense this bothered her on some level (how could it not?), because when I interviewed Gabel in 2006 for AM!'s major-label debut, New Wave, she definitely made mention of it, saying: "There is no pleasing everybody. ... I guarantee our new record will get the same reaction that all our records get. Some will be like 'It's awesome,' and others will be like 'I absolutely hate it.' But fast-forward a few years, and the ones who said they hated it are the ones who say they loved it all along."

It will be interesting to see how Against Me!'s fans — and detractors — react when Gabel begins living life as Laura Jane Grace, because they definitely can't accuse her of selling out anymore. If anything, her decision to begin gender reassignment treatments is the most punk-rock thing imaginable: being true to one's self, being unafraid to be different, speaking out regardless of the repercussions. These are the tenets the genre (and, for what it's worth, way of life) were founded on — and, really, what they should still be about today. If you have a problem with Gabel's decision, you're probably not a punk at all.

In coming out as transgender, Gabel will undoubtedly inspire others to do the same. She is proof that the truth is nothing to be ashamed of, that there is nothing as important — or admirable — as living the life you want to, on your own terms, detractors be damned. And the fact that Gabel's wife, Heather, will remain by her side as she begins this new chapter is not only equally inspiring, but, in the wake of the passage of North Carolina's Amendment 1, which made law that only a "marriage between one man and one woman" would be recognized by the state, it seems even more important. Because truly, is there any greater definition of love — or support, or dedication or unwavering union — than what they share? You can quote biblical verses to deny that fact, but really, you'd be missing the point.

For years, fans like me have marveled at Gabel's pained yet poignant lyrics, with their searing desires to break free and find a place in the world (on the standout New Wave track "The Ocean," Gabel growled, "And if I could have chosen/ I would have been born a woman"). It turns out, it went much deeper than that: Gabel was at war with her own body, and now, finally, she's found the courage to make peace with that conflict. It's beyond admirable; it's downright brave.

Like she told me six years ago, "There is no pleasing everybody." Ultimately, you've got to please yourself. And with courage and conviction, Gabel has done that. No matter how you feel about her new life, you can't deny that it's everyone's basic right to live life on their terms. That goes beyond music or politics or religion: It's humanity, pure and simple.

Email widget takes on viral rumors, fact checks for you

If you're one of those people who actually believes that Facebook is going to start charging users tomorrow, you're probably going to want to skip this post. LazyTruth is working on a Gmail widget -- something that could've easily been borne out of Google Labs -- that will automatically vet your messages and determine if they're full of viral misinformation. When it detects specific unique phrases that are consistent with known fallacies, it immediately circles back to Snopes.com and Factcheck.org (a pair of myth busting portals, if you couldn't guess) to provide original source links and even rebuttals. It seems like it could be a great way to make us all even lazier more efficient when it comes to debunking some of the wilder rumors that tend to affect our most gullible friends. Of course, given that there's no set release date just yet, perhaps the source link could use a scrubbing itself. We kid... we think.

Kyocera announces the Hydro and Rise Ice Cream Sandwich handsets

Kyocera

Kyocera has brought two new handsets to CTIA, the Hydro and the Rise, and they're letting them out of the bag this morning. Both phones are decidedly entry level, use the latest technology to enhance voice call sounds, and run Ice Cream Sandwich. The Hydro is a 3.5-inch HVGA with an MSM8655 Snapdragon at 1 GHz, and 512 MB of RAM. It's also waterproof at 1 meter for 30 minutes, because according to Kyocera "70% of users polled said that water resistance is an important feature in their next phones." We can't argue there, we've all seen horror stories about water and smartphones.

The Rise shares the same specs (and overall basic design) with a four-row horizontal sliding QWERTY keyboard instead of the water proof design. Again Kyocera tells us why, saying that "69 percent of consumers say QWERTY keyboards are a must-have or nice-to-have feature in their next mobile phones." A statistic that I can get behind, but I'm thinking most readers on the Internet will disagree with.

Possibly the most interesting specification is the "Tissue Conduction" audio technology. Originally designed for hearing aid devices, the tech uses a piezoelectric transducer that transmits sound through air as sound waves, and through soft tissue as vibrations. This "delivers dramatically improved hearing in noisy environments" according to Kyocera. You'll simply place any portion of the "A-cover" over the outer ear and ambient noise is cut and the transducer splits the signal to transmit on both paths. It's a really interesting concept, and one we can't wait to try.

There's no word on carrier, release dates, or prices, but both phones are equipped with EVDO radios and should appear later this year on Sprint or Verizon. Given Sprint's relation with Kyocera, my money is on the Now Network. See the full specifications for both after the break.
